Model Spotlight: Shantel Wellington
Sometimes the most powerful storms make the least amount of noise. Not flashy, WE call model Shantel Wellington the ‘Quiet Storm.’ Shantel makes fashion modeling look effortless, filled with grace and poise. One to watch; we sit down with the first-year University of West Indies (UWI) student to ask her a few questions.
Where are you from?
I am from Free Hill, St. Ann.
Why did you start modeling?
"I have always had a keen interest in fashion, but never felt I was the right size or shape for typical modeling work. I was often told I should try modeling, but I was so afraid, eventually, I realized this was something I could pursue, as a full-figure model. Receiving positive feedback from family, friends as well as others I have worked with has inspired me to want to continue this as a full-time career."
What are you most passionate about?
My biggest passion is learning about software and technology. I was fascinated with computers from a young age, so I decided to study Computer Science at university. It’s been a great choice for me! As an aspiring software engineer, I get to solve problems and develop programs that will diversify the world at large.
What is it about Computer Science that fascinated you?
All my life, I have had a fascination and interest in computing and technology. I have always enjoyed keeping up-to-date with the latest advances in technology and have remained amazed at the speed of computerized developments over the past few years. I have chosen to study computer science because I am fascinated by how computers work and I spend most of my spare time designing programs and web pages because I enjoy problem-solving and logical thinking.
What are you most grateful for?
1st Thessalonians 5:18 says in all things give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus. I’m grateful for my life and every other thing God has done for me and my family. I must say, I am truly blessed because, despite the current economic recession, neither I nor any of my family members has caught the virus or has lacked any of our basic needs, for this and more, I am truly grateful.
What are two of your goals for 2021?
I must admit that I am not a fan of new year's resolutions because after the first month I usually forget or discontinue pursuing them. This year, however, I decided maybe I should try it in order to give my life some form of “order” rather than “going with the flow.” My two main goals of this year are to achieve a G.P.A of no lower than 4.0 as well as to dedicate as much of my time to becoming a well-rounded model and woman who will contribute positively to society.
Tell us something about you no one knows?
I am currently developing other skills that will make me an even more developed software engineer in the future. I am currently working on a personal programming project, I am extremely excited about it. Additionally, I am learning new programming languages. Currently, I am learning SQL, Java, and HTML.
What are afraid of?
If I had to choose one fear, I would choose how nervous I get regarding public speaking. I have never had any formal training in this area, so that may be where my nervousness originates. I would love to overcome that fear one day. I feel like speaking in public could be beneficial to my career.
Who is your role model?
The most influential person in my life is my mom. My mother is exactly who I want to be like in the future: kind, compassionate, and a true epitome of a God-fearing woman. She is an inspiration and a blessing for me and for others who have come in contact with her.
If I had to change one thing about Jamaica what would it be?
If I had to change one thing about Jamaica it would be the level of poverty here. I truly believe, no one in this world should ever go hungry because of financial deprivation and social depression. It is an awful fact to accept that while the world is busy keeping up with luxury and innovation, there are still thousands of faceless beggars out on the cold streets begging for aims.
